Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Service Building
Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Service Building
National Landscape Architecture Award - 2015
Designed for the LEED service building of the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, this project demonstrates the applicability of high technology and sustainable design with renewable energy in public buildings. When completed, it will be the greenest of all public buildings and a symbol of sustainability in the public sector. The building's bright glass envelope and spacious interiors emphasise transparency. The landscape design prioritises accessibility and integration with the city and the social environment. The building has a total construction area of 51,000 m² and consists of 3 main blocks. The front block, housing the Minister's and VIP sections and articulated with jewel-box-like façade elements, faces the main road. The dynamically shaped office block rises behind it. Third, a link block between the two, acting as a bridge, contains the staff and public entrances. Sustainability is the main character of the building. Renewable energy sources have been used in every form where feasible and efficient, with the goal of achieving LEED Platinum certification. Drought-tolerant plants suited to the climate were chosen for the landscape, and the surroundings, interior sky gardens and roof areas were designed with special planting. To reduce energy and water consumption, correct orientation, daylighting, passive energy and green cover preservation methods were used. Two wind turbines were placed on the tower block, PV solar panels and collectors were used on the roofs, a trigeneration system recovers energy from the fuel used, geothermal energy is utilised, and filtered grey water and rainwater recycling systems were applied in the landscape. Recyclable materials were preferred in the landscape design. Light-coloured structural materials were chosen to prevent the "heat island" effect. Technologies such as demand-controlled, high-efficiency, low-energy and low-carbon SMD LED lighting and daylight-sensor automation were integrated into the outdoor lighting, so that the project sets a good example for public buildings.
